New York Yacht Club,
Newport, RI

2023 - 2024

The New York Yacht Club is located on about 8 acres of land overlooking Brenton Cove. It was constructed in 1906 for the John Nicholas Brown family and sold to the NYYC in 1987. The NYYC routinely hosts national and international sailing events and races, which bring in revenue to the state of Rhode Island and Newport.

The site repairs included repairing/rebuilding the original granite block seawalls that protect the shoreline and pier area, raising the existing top of the wall elevation by 2 feet to protect against flooding and sea level rise, and constructing a new pile-supported, concrete floating dock system that is nearly three times larger than the original fixed timber pier.

Fun fact: The floating docks were fabricated in Switzerland and then brought by boat to the site!

The repairs to the site will ensure continued protection of the waterfront area with added resilience to address future sea level rise. This will allow the NYYC to continue to use this area to support and promote sailing in Newport and Rhode Island.

FR Engineering provided construction oversight of the site repairs.
